AIRMW Presents: Takashi Shallow 'Hitorikko'

Hitorikko traverses Takashi Shallow's memories. Memories like waiting in a dentist's office, watching television, exercising in gym class, and discovering your parents' record collection. Shallow focuses on aspects of the mundane that, in retrospect, may not have been normal. Shallow's aunt, for example, recorded most of the television he watched growing up and mailed it to Chicago from Kyoto as a sort of brick of VHS tapes that were heavily bundled in layers upon layers of packing tape and shipping documents. Shallow intends to highlight the visual and sonic characteristics of both the universally relatable and completely idiosyncratic aspects of these memories over the course of several acts that resemble a play.

Takashi Shallow (he/they) is a teaching artist whose experiments intersect visual art with new media and performance. He operates an electronic music label, had a song featured in the pilot for the show Hive, and, one time, a song they produced aired on the radio in Belgium. He teaches art and music at the University of Chicago and is a board member of the Chicago Japanese American Historical Society. Dazed Digital includes them in the article 10 of the best Chicago artists right now and The Arts Club of Chicago has named him a Visual Arts Fellow.
