For this iteration of AfriClassical Futures, Angel Bat Dawid will present the world premier of a new composition, followed by a discussion with a panel of the series' curators and special guests TBA.
Angel Bat Dawid is a Black American composer, improviser, clarinetist, pianist, vocalist, educator and DJ. In 2019 she released her debut album The Oracle with Chicago label International Anthem Recording Co. and received widespread critical acclaim with Pitchfork declaring it, “a vibrant, spiritual, free-jazz document of Black life as it stands today.” Known for her prowess as a bandleader and performer, Angel has composed and performed several live pieces including Requiem for Jazz at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, and Peace: A Suite for Skylanding, commissioned by the Art Institute of Chicago for Yoko Ono’s outdoor Skylanding installation. Angel was named Winter JazzFest’s 2022 ‘Artist-in-Residence,’ where she debuted her fearless expedition Afro-Town Topics: A Mythological Afrofuturist Revue’ (WBGO), and was named The Chicago Tribune’s “Chicagoan of the Year,”
Now, as she tours, composes and performs all over the world, Angel Bat Dawid will be unveiling a new composition this August, enitied God Wills the Negro, a musical adaptation and composition exploring Sun-Ra's mystical findings of God Wills The Negro, written by Theodore P. Ford and Angela L. Holland. 'An intentional wandering, the searching for knowing and understanding of self, and the process of finding oneself in America while Black.'
With every intention of carrying this messaging, Angel will exclusively debut this piece August 20th, 2022, as part of Elastic Arts’ AfriClassical Futures Series. AfriClassical Futures began during the height of the 2020 pandemic, Striving to affirm the under-recognized achievements and challenges of Black American creators, performers and composers of Classical Music. The series has highlighted amazing pieces performed by composers such as Renee Baker and the group Sista Strings, exposing audiences to the world of Black classical music, and pushing the conversation on the future of Black performers, and composers in classical musical spaces. Having worked so closely with Elastic Arts over the years, Angel debuting her composition God Wills the Negro with a conversation following the performance, could have only come full circle here at the AfriClassical Futures Series.
