Improvised Music Series: Mountain Laurel, The Arab Blues wsg Marvin tate

Mountain Laurel

The Arab Blues

photographer: Hiroshi Ayama

Mountain Laurel (Grace Papineau-Couture) is a Canadian multimedia artist from Edmonton, Alberta and currently based in Chicago, Illinois. Their work uncovers the link between drone and folk horror through sonic tapestries woven out of live performance with found object instrumentation and analog tape loops. Lush reverberation and delay-steeped tape loops are juxtaposed with the creature-like sound emanating from an instrument made of guitar strings and a small branch. The compositions created with these objects are aided with graphic scores that use various metaphysical and/or outmoded scientific texts and imagery. Everything is a ritual.

Rami Gabriel and Karim Nagi (The Arab Blues) create an electro urban amalgam of Arab tradition and Chicago blues. They employ historical and contemporary instruments to reinterpret forms, melodies, and rhythms; the result is an original expression of immigrant artistry with passionate musicality and revolutionary attitude.

They will be joined by special guest Marvin Tate!
