Elastro Series is pleased to welcome two nights in a row with some of Chicago’s finest in electroacoustic music! For tonight we have the duo of The GILGAMANIANS and an ensemble performance from Maku Sica.
The GILGAMANIANS reunite shortwave radio specialist Don Meckley and percussionist Michael
Zerang, who were formerly two-thirds of the legendary experimental music trio, LIOF
MUNIMULA, that was active from 1980 - 1995. After the death of original member Daniel
Scanlan in 2018, Meckley and Zerang decided to join forces again to record ESCAPE FROM
DARK MATTER, a meditation on the looming climate catastrophe, released on Pink Palace
Recording in 2022.
Utilizing a Grundig Satellit International 650 Shortwave Radio, Meckley pulls in sounds and
textures from the atmosphere and coaxes a wide range of timbre in real time. For his part,
Zerang stretches his acoustic drums through the use of friction and vibration to create a sound palette that compliments and contrasts with the ethereal sounds of the shortwave radio.
Maku Sica will be joined by special guests Mark Feldman on violin, Thymme Jones on various, and drummer George Marich.
“A lot of people flipped out over how amazing Mako Sica’s last album, Ronda (FTR 409), was. Ronda was a 2LP set whereupon the Chicago trio collaborated with legendary local percussionist Hamid Drake. This pairing seemed like a natural to us, but for some reason people have been woefully unaware of Mako Sica despite the fact they’ve been releasing killer records for a decade, and playing live shows that submerge your brain in a sonic soup that recalls the Sun City Girls at their most psychedelically Eastern.” - Byron Coley
