Elastro Series: Jason Kahn, Dalia Chin, Cunningham/Shippy

The June edition of Elastro features a solo set from Chicago flutist Dalia Chin, electronics artist Jason Kahn in town all the way from Zurich, Switzerland, and a duo of STL violinist Alex Cunningham w/ Chicago guitarist Mark Shippy.

Dalia Chin

“Yo Soy Mi Ruta” (“I am my own path”), is a one-woman show in which I use my own story as a narrative to communicate the idea that all people have their own story to tell. I aim to empower the audience to hear and feel heard, see and feel seen. This is a multi-sensory journey of discovery via improvisatory sonic material, video/photography display, and processed field recordings.

I will be using electronic material to support the improvisatory sound work. The audio tracks are a compilation of voices telling personal stories, urban, and natural sounds. As support for the sonic materials, I am collaborating with photographer Marc Perlish to realize the idea of “hearing with the eyes” in order to illustrate various meanings for one’s path, from the obvious to abstract dream-like paths.

Jason Kahn

Jason’s work with electronics involves chaotic feedback systems and placing their body in the circuit flow. Grabbing open leads with their hands makes and breaks circuits, causing the synth to overload or collapse. Various contact microphones and electro magnetic inductors and the synthesizer's own output via a mixing board are used to modulate the parameters of the synth. it's a very dynamic system, played in an expressive way -- much like
any acoustic instrument, but electronic.

Cunningham/Shippy

Shippy is best known for his work with deconstructionist underground legends U.S. Maple. His idiosyncratic approach to the instrument has influenced a generation of avant-rock musicians. Mark began his career in noise rock groups Snailboy and Shorty, which evolved into U.S. Maple. He was a member of Invisible Things and Miracle Condition, and played in Marnie Stern’s touring band. Recent endeavors include trio recordings with Ben Billington (Tiger Hatchery, Quicksails) and guitarist Daniel Wyche, as well as myriad other collaborative ensembles.

Cunningham has quickly risen to prominence among the free improv cognoscenti. Combining academic acumen with a DIY ethos, his virtuosity is augmented by emotion and intensity. Alex collaborated with Claire Rousay for a release on esteemed label Astral Spirits, and was a member of Vernacular String Trio. He is also one-half of Apathist!, with Chris Trull (Grand Ulena, Yowie), and has recorded with Lisa Cameron & Damon Smith.
