The Fortieth Day + Noise Crush
The Fortieth Day is the duo of Isidro Reyes and Mark Solotroff, both members of the heavy-electronics band BLOODYMINDED and the doom metal band Anatomy of Habit. Reyes and Solotroff founded The Fortieth Day in 2005, and they utilize guitar, bass, and electronics to create epic, heavy, psychedelic-industrial, drone soundscapes. The duo's uniquely dense and murky music is created through an improvisational approach and their recording sessions go through heavy editing and processing, prior to their release. In early 2007, they began performing live publicly, collaborating with video artist Lisa Slodki – AKA Noise Crush – to provide a striking visual element to their performances. Slodki processes found video that she then mixes live during their performances, using a series of VCRs to superimpose seamlessly looping video. The result is a dreamlike blend of abstract, black and white images, which always seem just far away enough from the realm of being recognizable. Slodki’s approach to processing her video is closely aligned with how Reyes and Solotroff process their sound, and early on, it was decided by the duo that they would only perform live when there was the possibility of working with Slodki.
Gwyneth Zeleny Anderson animates* out of devotion to slow change, and in order to remember over and over again that nothing is really stuck or alone. Every project tries to transform the violence of isolation, and celebrate each other as interconnected, weird phenomena. Gwyneth has presented work in galleries, forests, and empty lots around the northern hemisphere, including with Roman Susan, Weinberg/Newton Gallery, Roots & Culture, Constellation, and 6018 NORTH in Chicago; St. Charles Projects in Baltimore; and @ptt in Geneva. She's been an artist in residence at the Experimental Sound Studio, FRISE (Germany), Mall of Found (New York), and Utopiana (Switzerland), and her work is included in collections at FRISE and the Institute of Contemporary Art Library in Baltimore. Projects in Chicago have been written about in Newcity, the Reader, Dusted Magazine, Chicago Artist Writers, and Chicago Magazine. She thinks all artist bios are deceptive. (gwynethvzanderson.com)
