We’re excited for the August Dark Matter Series where we welcome musician/songwriter and Dark Matter Residency alumni Gira Dahnee back to Chicago to collaborate with some of Chicago’s finest. Dahnee’s songwriting focus is Afrofuturism, using the past and present to create better futures of people of African descent. For this performance she will be presenting new songs with an amazing supporting band that includes David Boykin, Scottie McNiece, and Adam Zanolini. We’ll then have Dark Matter resident Muso presenting new work that involves their exploration of spoken word / music. We’ll have an opening DJ set presented by BlkRoom from Julian Green. It’ll be another special night, join us!
Artist Bios
Gira Dahnee is a Chicago musician who believes music is a passageway to the metaphysical realm. The conceptual interest of Gira’s work is Afrofuturism: using the past and present to create better futures for people of African descent. Harnessing the concept of feminine goddess power, she discusses sexism, abuse, and uses music as a tool to face and heal from these issues. She also focuses on community development by using music as a force to bring people together. Her album A Call to Love is an album that was written after several deaths in her family: a cousin at the hand of gun violence, and her father and stepmother within the last year. The title song of her LP is an example of the experience of love: the smooth calling we feel when we are in sync with a lover, and the torment we have when we experience turbulence in that relationship. She hopes to inspire others to live life to the fullest and enjoy the process of life.
Muso is a storyteller whose goal is to create immersive worlds that center characters birthed from different aspects of her human experience. She focuses mainly on womanhood, sex, power and culture, ultimately as part of an identity which seeks to deconstruct and challenge hegemonic principles.
Julian Green is a Chicago-based open format DJ. Their work is centered around their experiences as a young Black queer person, and it consistently concerns topics such as existence, belonging, community, love, joy, and care. The creative process behind their work involves drawing from their internal emotions, the external energies that guide them, and their Black, queer, worldwide influences. They channel each of these elements into a collection of sounds, which they hope enchants their listeners, makes them feel something, and propels them to move their bodies. On August 19th, Julian will be doing a set in collaboration with The.Blkroom and the Elastic Arts Performing Arts Center. You can also find Julian on Instagram and Soundcloud @julianmgreen
