Rather than a single artistic director, programming at Elastic is done by a roster of 10-15 independent curators focused on a wide variety of genres, styles, and practices from jazz and improvised music to punk, hip hop, noise, classical music, puppetry, poetry, film and multimedia work, dance and especially work that crosses boundaries between any of those domains. All Elastic curators are practicing artists. They program periodic series - weekly, monthly, quarterly, occasional - bringing a diversity of perspectives to our programming.
The Performing Arts Curatorial Residency program invites one performing artist each year to join our curatorial roster, to curate a new series at Elastic for one year. The Residency helps keep Elastic's programming fresh while offering an opportunity for artists to organize events at Elastic. The Curatorial Resident crafts an idea for a series of four performances at Elastic (something markedly different than our current programming), determines its parameters, timing, flow, and aesthetic criteria. Resident invites artists to perform, communicates with those artists about the details of their event, helps promote the events. Several series have continued after the Curatorial Residency
