Queer Skys

Queer Skys presents a selection of works from painter and designer, lm freebird. Queer Skys introduces dreamy surrealism celebrating queer identity with a splash of existentialism. It is both fantastical and divine, finding beauty in queerness and empowering the oppressed.

freebird started making digital portraits of black women as she wanted to see herself, and others like her, as beautiful and ethereal beings. Her work is made up mainly of vibrant blues, pinks, and purples forcing her portraits to take up space, and stand out, as representations of what many feel they cannot do. freebird describes her relationship to her work as, “an on again off again relationship that can sometimes feel a bit taxing when emotions run high.”. These works are purposeful imaginings that help to ease the pain of past and present traumas with the sense relief that letting tears fall can bring.

The pieces in Queer Skys are of freebird’s ever expanding fantasy. She has always resonated with the term “head in the clouds'' and uses a literal interpretation of this in her works. freebird mixes breathtaking representations of sorrowful feelings with cosmic portraits. The logic defying rivers of cried rainbows, the mystifying hands in the clouds, and the intensely appealing dreamscapes look beyond what is in front of us into a new reality. Her art serves as a tool to help heal wounds made by a society filled with unrelenting oppression of both the mind and the practical world.

freebird relates her process to group therapy, “I’m always in my head working things out on my own. When I make art it's just me, myself and I, trying to make sense of this world in a way that I can understand.” During quarantine freebird had more time for introspection which is when she realized how deeply ingrained the denial of her identity was. This got her thinking about who she truly is and how much she had failed to acknowledge her queer and black experience. This fantastical world she creates drives exploration universally, in the imagination and intimately, within the self.

Queer Skys is a selection of lm freebird’s paintings that transport you outside the walls of the room. It encourages you to look beyond what you see into new realities, through the clouds and to the stars beyond. It is a legendary romance of chimera and self–and a celebration of identity.
