After taking a November break for the series, the December edition of our Pleiades Series will feature two duo sets with Texas-based musician Lisa Cameron. First up she’ll join longtime collaborator Alex Cunningham on violin in from St. Louis. Following she’ll have a first time meeting with Chicago improvisational vocalist Janna Lee. This show will kick off with these two sets and then lead into the classic Pleiades free improvisation jam session which is open to all womxn and nonbinary musicians, movers and other artists (e-mail pleiades@elasticarts.org to join the jam.) Lisa Cameron (aka Venison Whirled) is from Austin, Tx. Using amplified/acoustic percussion and strings, she locates resonant frequencies in space to create oscillating overtones, which are then employed as sound sources for live improvisation. She has improvised live with Jandek, Mani Neumier, Eugene Chadbourne, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, Mike Watt, Jaap Blonk, Faust, Ernesto Diaz-Infante, Claire Rousay, Alex Cunningham, Damon Smith, Jessica Ackerley, Eli Wallace, Sandy Ewen, Raquel Bell,Tom Carter, Nathan Bowles, Fritz Welch, Sandy Ewen, Thor Harris, Jonathan Horne, and others. Alex Cunningham is a violinist, improviser, and visual artist based in St. Louis, MO. Cunningham has recorded with Lisa Cameron, Damon Smith, claire rousay, Chris Trull (under the Apathist! moniker), Mark Shippy, Thom Nguyen, Patrick Shiroishi, Jessica Ackerley, and Weasel Walter. Past collaborations include the groups Vernacular String Trio, Hess/Cunningham Duo, and Hardbody. Cunningham has released music on Close/Far Recordings, Personal Archives, Already Dead, Fort Evil Fruit, Working Man Lay Down, Orb Tapes, Industrial Coast, Profane Illuminations, Flat Plastic Home Media, and Astral Spirits.
Janna Lee is a Chicago artist who uses her voice to explore various facets of herself, and enjoys blurring the line between angel and demon. In addition to being the vocalist of Snek Trio and Obsequies, her solo work combines harsh noise and haunting vocals into a weapon that embraces the dark side of humanity. Her versatility has garnered a diverse range of collaborations, including Bob Genghis Khan, Galaxxu, Unmanned Ship, Ben Zucker, and Scarlet Diva.
