Pleiades Series: Counterfeit Madison, Mai Sugimoto

For this month’s Pleiades Series we have Counterfeit Madison, the musical manifestation of Sharon Udoh (they/she/unsure?), a Nigerian-American pianist, composer, arranger, and vocalist based in Chicago. Their work combines vocals that seemingly erupt from the center of the earth with a stage presence that somehow feels both dangerous and kind, abandoning genre for the expansive. Her collaborators have included Marvin Tate, Yaw Agyeman, Adam Zanolini, Cristal Sabbagh, Tune-Yards, clipping., Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus, D-Composed, Ben Lamar Gay, Angel Bat Dawid, and for this particular evening, Naydja Bruton and Lyn Rye. Their performances have been described as a warm bowl of soup, a tornado, a jalapeño pepper, a Jackson Pollock painting, a bulldozer, and magnetic. She has an absurd millennial addiction to sparkling water.

Following her set we’ll engage our classic Pleaides jam for all femme/nonbinary/trans artists to join in with the curated guests. You can email pleiades@elasticarts.org to sign up, or sign up at the door. Free for all jammers!
