Please join us for a special Sunday Elastro where we welcome the wonderful electro-acoustic duo of Alex Koi and Kirin McElwain. We’ll have Madame Orange, the duo of Emily Beisel and Bill Harris, opening the evening.
Alex Koi x Kirin McElwain's music floats between musical poetry, composition and improvisation. Their song cycle "Wake" is a feature-length evening concert comprised of vocals, cello, and modular synthesizer that bends between folk, chamber music and electronic. Their work has headlined at Eighth Blackbird's Eyrie Festival and the Detroit Institute of Arts, and their upcoming season features engagements at KM28 (Berlin), Kerrytown Concert House, KinoSaito, and Carnegie Mellon University. Hailing from New York City's avant-garde music scene, Alex and Kirin have individually worked with many vanguard musicians including: Dev Hynes [Blood Orange],Shara Nova, Toshi Reagon, This Will Destroy You, Mary Halvorson, and Trevor Dunn amongst others.
Madam Orange is the duo project of Chicago stalwarts Emily Rach Beisel (bass clarinet, electronics) and Bill Harris (drums, electronics). Both formidable solo artists, Beisel and Harris combine their respective sonic worlds into a project that often sounds like far more than two people playing, pushing toward the outer limits of heavy improvisation, rhythmic interlock, amplification, and feedback. Their music moves fluidly between dense, aggressive intensity and spacious, highly sensitive textures, driven by a near-telepathic musical connection and a shared interest in extending acoustic instruments through electronics. The duo has toured throughout the Midwest, East Coast, and Canada, including Midwest tours in 2024 and East Coast and Canadian tours in 2023. Their debut duo record, Parallax, is set to release on the Chicago label Amalgam in October 2026.
