We’re excited to welcome Iowa City based percussionist David Hurlin to our stage for his Elastic Arts debut! He will present a solo set followed by collaborations with action artist Rin Peisert and interdisciplinary artist Marvin Tate. Music at 8!

Artist Bios

David Hurlin received his BFA in photography and with a minor in tabla of the Hindustani classical music tradition from Maharishi International University (MIU) including time abroad in India studying with tabla master Anup Ghosh. Hurlin is a professional drummer and percussionist. Drummer for Elizabeth Moen, Bo Ramsey, Apocalyspo Tantric Noise Choir, Soulmath and most recently with Mike Dillon Band and Nolatet. In addition to touring and recording, Hurlin is working on compositions and collaborations at the very edge of drumming, which operate at the intersection of sound art, sculpture, instrument building and performance art. Recent works include performances at Joey Fauerso's exhibition, Inside the Spider's Body, at Bemis Center in Omaha, Sound is a Body Held, a sound and movement collaboration with Tony Orrico at Signs & Symbols Gallery in New York City and Flørli, Norway, as a percussionist in the Nakatani Gong Orchestra at the Englert Theater in Iowa City, in addition to local performances at Hancher, PS1, Feed Me Weird Things Iowa City at Trumpet Blossom, Gabe's, Parking Spaces Project, Climate Fest, Sculpture & Intermedia Open House and the Visual Arts Building in Iowa City. Hurlin lives in Iowa City with his family and is an MFA candidate in Sculpture & Intermedia at the University of Iowa.

Marvin Tate is a Chicago native, born and raised on the city’s west side. He is an award-winning Poet, and Performer. His works have appeared and heard on stages internationally and locally, including National Public Radio’s, “This American Life”, Def -Jam Poetry , and on the BBC Radio-sponsored program, “The Poetry Detective”. Tate combines performance art, with improvisation, poetry, spoken word, and song, to create powerful and personal narratives about relationships and the struggle to be present in a constantly changing world. He has recorded or shared the stage with the following Artists: The late, International Anthem Recording Artist, Jamie Branch’s, Jazz Drummer , Pitch-Fork Music Founder, and Band leader, Mike Reed, multi-instrumentalists, Ben LaMar Gay, Angel Bat Dawid, Bill Mckay, Leroy Bach and Visual Artists and performer, Theaster Gates Jr., The Black Monks of Mississippi, Temple of Doom, Feminist-Artist , and legendary Porn Actress, Annie Sprinkle, Alabaster Deplume, Bitchin Bajas, The Separatist Party, Circuit Des Yeux, Tim Kinsella and Angel Olsen. Lastly Tate is the founder of the legendary, experimental soul band, D-settlement. There 3 vinyl boxset (American Dream Records) was voted ‘The Best Of’ in Pitchfork, Band Camp and NY Times in 2022. Presently, is ‘The Artist in-resident’ at Theater Y

Rin Peisert is an interdisciplinary artist who works with bodies, sounds, found objects, and actions to explore conditions for interdependence and sincerity. Her site-responsive actions use intervention as a tool to reorganize behavior and to exaggerate the quotidian. Peisert’s work has been seen at Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art, Power Station of Art Shanghai, The Momentary Museum, and Defibrillator as well as streets, rooftops, a bomb shelter, and a market for arranged marriage. Peisert has an MFA in Art Practice from School of Visual Arts, NYC. She co-produces a series of graphic and instructional scores called, Image of Thought with Luc Mosley. She is the Performing Arts Curatorial Artist-in-Residence at Elastic Arts, curating environments for durational and endurance performance art and sound in a series titled, Relative Intensity Noise.
