Dark Matter Series: Oui Ennui, Azieb, Panty (DJ)

Oui Ennui

Azieb & Azarias

PANTY

At our first Dark Matter Series event of 2024, we welcome back some series alums who have graced our stage in the past, but are bringing fresh new sounds and sights for our hearts and minds to ingest. Headlining, we’ll hear from the prolific Oui Ennui who most often uses synths, electronics, and voice to create unique compositions for every outing. We’ve seen Oui perform quite a bit, always with something brand new and fully out there. Preceding Oui we’ll hear a set from midwest native Azieb in a duo with percussionist Azarias presenting her new songs. She constantly pushes her sound forward, fusing genres like trance, hip-hop, soul, r&b, and classical with a down-to-earth message meant to heal. Throughout the night we’ll have selections from Dark Matter Resident PANTY on the DJ decks! This is going to be an incredibly fun Saturday night, so don’t miss it!

Artist Bios

Brought up on the sonic transmissions of the Brooklyn underground, PANTY is an afro-caribbeing organizer and artist who is happy to report that hardcore will never die. Playfully peeling back the expansive layers of break- and bass-full selections across spacetime, they traverse realms so far, wide, and deep as skankhall, reggothton, doombow, trapper gabber, industrial club, dubwise glitch, hi nrg rave, euphoric jungle, and otherwise ambient chune dem for anti-capitalists.

Midwest native Azieb has been making music since she was little, learning piano as a child and making her first productions using FruityLoops. Her music evolved when she began spitting at spoken word events in college. Eventually combining the beats and the bars. Since then her art has evolved into several releases such as her first mixtape “Stuck” in 2012 and the pop project “Products We Love” in 2013. Her self-titled project “Azieb” gained attention from the Chicago Tribune, and she has also been featured on BRIC TV Brooklyn, NY, performing a few pieces from her latest body of work titled “Inner Child”. She constantly pushes her sound forward, fusing genres like trance, hip-hop, soul, r&b, and classical with a down-to-earth message meant to heal.

Azarias is a producer inspired by his Brazilian roots and years in the drumline. Over the past decade Azarias has released six beat tapes, building the foundation for his latest collaborative releases: Buy Muy Drugs(2017), Bullies(2019), and Of The Chasm(2022). Azarias’ music aims to bend and shatter the ears of the innocent.

Oui Ennui’s work builds sonic mazes that lead listeners on a dizzying chase through instrumental hip hop, synth explorations, drones, zones, and everything in between. He’s a chameleon at times, shifting modes depending on where the muse lands, but always finding the magic touch that produces vivid images through sound.

One of the more quietly indefatigable figures of the pandemic, he’s released an album on every Bandcamp Friday for two years. His work has taken in a protean range of styles and concepts, from psycho-geographic nostalgia to character sketches of the animal imagination and his free-wheeling, confessional liner notes and regular newsletter updates are often miniature works of art in themselves. Oui Ennui is a ceaselessly inventive figure who should be commanding much wider recognition.
