We’re very excited to see what Dark Matter Resident Jarius King has in store for his residency capstone! We’ll have a work-in-progress showing this evening and then a full event one month later on Wednesday March 27th. The work is called For the Record and is a multifaceted project that explores Afro-Sino relations and identities through art, documentation, and examination of his personal experience as a Black man dealing with global anti-Blackness.
Jarius says, “Embracing Hong Kong’s unique practices along with the techniques of aerosol art from the United States, I seek to explore and examine the shared space between these distinct artistic traditions. In addition, I will weave in the movements from martial arts and street dance, forging connections that challenge cultural barriers. Through collaboration with various artists in Hong Kong and the U.S.A, the work will delve into intersections between art forms, cultures, and individual artists’ methodologies. While my work is intended to bridge cultural divides and foster understanding among all, I place particular emphasis on the Black and African-descendant communities, Asian communities, and their intricate and evolving relationships through Black stateside art forms.
For The Record stands as a testament to my commitment to fostering collaboration with local artists, community engagement, inclusivity, and championing the transformative power of art. It is an invitation to embark on a shared journey of discovery, understanding, and celebration of our collective humanity. Together, we can remove barriers and instigate positive change through the multi-faceted expression of art.”
