CLEAT Series: Gregory O'Drobinak, Russell Gillespie

We’ve reached the final CLEAT Series of the year, our series that concentrates on work composed/performed on our 16-channel speaker system. This month we have sound artists Gregory O’Drobinak and Russell Gillespie.

Artist Bios

Gregory O’Drobinak is a sound artist, improviser, phonographer and instrument builder based in Gary, Indiana. His work embodies aspects of the numinous, of ritualistic practices and of the visceral. His electronic music spans styles from drone and ambient to improvisational soundscapes and beyond. His fascination with altered or entrained psychological states experienced during rituals and paranormal events led to the incorporation of infrasound in his pieces. Special subwoofers were designed to reproduce sound frequencies well below the threshold for pitch perception. Tactile sound, beat frequencies and feedback are employed as compositional tools. His electro-acoustic invented instruments add unique sounds to round out the sound palette. Gregory has performed his compositions at the University of Chicago, the MCA, Sound Symposium 2000 (Newfoundland), the Bridgeport Arts Center, the DeKalb Cultural Center, the Fuse Factory, and at the Green Mill. As a musician, he has performed with DCMT, the FROG Javanese gamelan ensemble, the Chicago Scratch Orchestra, Chicago Phonography, the World Listening Project, Dissecting Norton and NONop.

Russell Gillespie is pleased to present Michigan Phoenix, an environmental song cycle drawn from a 35-year relationship with the Great Lakes State. In this musical reflection on that history, field recordings of bountiful waters and avian life are combined with music and memory, in homage to Michigan’s diverse history and seasonal beauty. Whether it be Folk, Rock, Motown, or EDM – Great Lakes, rivers, crackling ice, or rain – the sounds of this great state have imprinted themselves in Gillespie’s body, mind, and soul. Through Michigan Phoenix, he would like to welcome each listener to wander with him through a series of memories that are as steady and shifting as the dunes where the wind meets the water on the western shore.
