February CLEAT Series features three acts exploring very different realms of sound. It is our absolute pleasure when we see the 16-channel speaker system being used so stylistically differently throughout a night, let alone a season of the series. The mighty CLEAT with so many possibilities! Join us for another beautiful night of spatial sound.
Artist Bios
Anthony Janas is a sound artist with a focus on advanced modular synthesizer techniques and processed field recordings. His work has ranged from sound installations on sailboats, multi-sensorial dinner parties, to playful performances such as juggling cheeseburgers. Anthony Janas’ work attempts to merge the institutional and pastoral moments of human existence. Tonight he will present a 16 channel performance of his composition, Sensory Mastication.
Dom Bonelli (they/he) is a sound designer and noise musician living in Chicago. They will be improvising no-input music using an autotune Peavy mixer and the CLEAT multichannel speaker setup. Their improvisations are a negotiation between person and chaos that emerges from the mixer’s circuitry: an acting and reacting to the noise. Rather than performing the instrument, they perform with it.
Mercer and Robin takes piano samples and highly pianistic playing styles as their primary material. The sound world of these dueling pianos is extended into microtonality, timbral deconstruction, and physically impossible musical gestures. Romantic, harmonically focused material fluidly coexists with complex timbral-textural exploration. The result is a soundscape at once familiar and alien, where the original sound image of the classical piano is rendered surreal.
