Naima Karlsson (London) joins Dawid and Zanolini to continue a creative exploration begun in 2021 with the late David Ornette Cherry, engaging the music of Don Cherry and finding new directions in composition, improvisation, community, and participatory music.
Naima Karlsson is a musician and visual artist based in London, and is an archivist and coordinator for the Estate of Moki Cherry and Cherry Archive. Her main instrument is the piano, as well as percussion, vibraphone, organ and keyboards. Naima has studied piano and music in the tradition of her grandfather Don Cherry, with her uncles Eagle-Eye and David Ornette Cherry, and with Mexican pianist and improviser Ana Ruiz.
David Ornette Cherry (1958-2022) was a pianist, composer and music educator from Watts, California. He was the eldest son of legendary jazz pioneer Don Cherry and performed with his father from the age of 16. David collaborated with Ed Blackwell, Charlie Haden, Wadada Leo Smith, Phil Ranelin, Nana Vasconcellos, Dwight Trible, Kamau Daaood and Kahil El'Zabar and his Ethnic Heritage Ensemble + many more.
"The music never stops. Jazz is dynamic. It is a continuum that expands and takes from the players and composers so they can add their little something to the art. It's not about JUST referencing the past. It's about keeping the momentum going like a ball that keeps rolling along." (David Ornette Cherry).
The pulses and melodies that arise from David’s jazz, classical, African, world music background speak about our human experiences through the language of sound. He was listening with an open heart and fresh mind to his collaborators – some of the great jazz artists of our times, and to the world around him in a way that makes his compositions not only music, but a way of life, a positive form of energy, and a language for connection.
