Night two of two with Asian Improv aRts Midwest as they present Filipino-American guitarist / composer Karl Evangelista's What Else is There? Quartet.
Tonight’s group will be a sextet including Alex Hawkins, Tatsu Aoki, Charles Rumback, Mai Sugimoto, and Jeff Chan.
Evangelista ranks among a new wave of musicians pushing the traditions of jazz and experimental music into the 21st century. Synthesizing the heavy legacy of contemporary improvised music with popular song and 20th century composition, Evangelista explores multicultural concepts with sonic intensity and political fervor.
Evangelista's What Else is There? Quartet features UK pianist Alexander Hawkins, master bassist Tatsu Aoki, and stalwart drummer Michael Zerang. When this ensemble first convened, conversation turned to music and family. Pondering this notion, Aoki asked, "What else is there?"
This project combines Evangelista's raging, jazz-inflected compositions with ruminative free improvisations, each piece essayed with joy, intensity, and spontaneity. The ensemble's debut record releases on Fundacja Słuchaj on September 8, 2023.
