Afrofuturist Weekend returns in 2021 with in-person, virtual, and hybrid performances and workshops!
The Afrofuturist Weekend is a celebration of Black artists making forward-looking work that envisions radically positive futures for Black people. Deploying new technologies, drawing upon history, subverting and inverting exploitative hierarchies, Afrofuturism puts Black people at the center of narratives about the future. Elastic's annual AFW features performances, visual art installations, video presentations, workshops, panel discussions, and immersive experiences meant to generate a call to action to realize these visions.

This year, LuFuki and Divine Providence from Detroit will return to Elastic bringing a project called Autophysiopsychic Millennium. The project is a series of workshops in Chicago and Detroit in which participants are invited to engage with the the musical, philosophical, and spiritual work of Dr. Yusef Lateef. The workshop will develop into a collaborative participatory composition session, and then the compositions will be performed, bringing Dr. Lateef's work into a new millennium. Autophysiopsychic Millennium is supported by a generous grant from the Inner City Muslim Action Network and The Alliance for the Transformation of Musical Academe (ATMA).
The festival will also feature elements from Katrina Flores' Assaman. Titled with the Wolof word for cosmos, Assaman is a film conceived as the center of a multimodal and multidemensional immersive sensory experience bridging film, activations, gallery, and performance. Photos, performances, and video excerpts will begin to develop the spirit of this expansive story of finding balance inside ourselves by understanding the sacred connections to our divine feminine and masculine energies, making space for deep healing and growth to call forward a thriving future, both personal and interpersonal, where freedom via self-care and self-love are centered.
Sunday will feature a panel moderated by LaRob K. Rafael, which will include Angel Bat Dawid, Lufuki, Dr. Adam Zanolini, Asher Gamedze (via zoom from South Africa),and Ayanna Woods.
