Dark Matter Residents Leah Lara and Zahra Baker guide us through history, fantasy and beyond for Day 5 of AFW9!

The final day of AfroFuturist Weekend begins with an afternoon of all-ages wonder and inspiration from 2024 Dark Matter Residents Leah Lara and Zahra Baker.

12:00PM - 1:30 PM - All-Ages Puppet Workshop + Performance w/ Leah Lara

Come view a miniature lighthouse seascape enclosed in the snowglobe of cyberspace. The scenic screensaver comes to life as a mouse interacts with the webpage. Live theremin voices the sounds of the mystical dark shores where mermaids are known to linger.

After the show, stay for a fun, creative tunnel book workshop. Create a 4-5 layered paper scene, brought to life through light and shadow! And come for a behind-the-scenes tour of the set!

Workshop- All ages! Children accompanied by a scissor- safe adult.

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM - Zahra Baker’s “This Black Is Me: Sacred Encounters with Callie House”

Through communal singing, poetry, storytelling and archival recordings, this invocation will connect ritual, historical research and dreamtime imaginings to honor the life of Callie House who was the first known person to fight for reparations post slavery in America.

This performance also features collaborating artists Sojourner Zenobia, Najee Zaid-Searcy. Adam Zanolini, Avreeayl Ra, Paige Brown, and Luc Mosley.

Prepare be moved, motivated, and renewed in spirit!

$15 / $10 w/ Student ID - Tickets Available at the Door

Feel free to attend either or both performances.

The Dark Matter Residency is supported by generous funding from The Joyce Foundation, the Reva and David Logan Foundation, and the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.
