AfroFuturist Weekend meets Flex Obscura Series for Day 3 of AFW9!

Flex Obscura at AfroFuturist Weekend brings a micro film festival with Official Selections representing a range of films, from Chicago-based to international projects, screened in conversation with Terence Nance!

We'll have a retro/futurespective featuring a curated selection of his short films and a real-time, virtual conversation with the filmmaker himself. The evening also includes industry networking, filmmaker awards, and a performance by Nikki Patín with special guest Angel Bat Dawid.

The evening culminates with the Club Obscura Afterparty featuring CTRLZORA and DJ King GNS.

Smile4Kime by Director Elena Guzman

  • Smile4Kime is an experimental autoethnographic film that tells the story of how two friends transcend time, space, and even death to find hope and resilience through their struggles with mental illness. Through the lens of the friendship between two women: Kime–a vibrant, unapologetic Black woman who lived with mental illness, and Elena–an Afro Puerto Rican woman and devoted friend coping with grief in the wake of Kime’s death.

Scroll Food by Writer David Leonard

  • Set against the backdrop of the pandemic, “Scroll Food” is a short film that tells the story of Derrick Loomis, quarantining at home alone, absorbing a smorgasbord of social media posts being spread online. His mental health begins to suffer due to his inability to put down his phone and “disconnect” from the world while he also deals with his own personal demons and depression.

Ro & The Stardust by Director Eunice Levis

  • Ro & the Stardust follows a teen and her terminally ill grandmother as they build a rocket ship they plan to launch to outer space.

With a Promise to love you deeply by Director Taylor Wren

  • This is a contemporary Yoruba folklore centering the journey of two sisters, Jupiter and Saturn, as they travel to the world without time and retrieve their Mother’s spirit. With the metaphysical aid of a medicine woman named Grandmother moon, thye interact with the four elements of the Yowa cross and speak to the manifestation of our ancestral world, Ku Mpemba.

Bubbling Synapses by Director William Eguienta

  • An idea…needs space, time & love to grow…But, at what cost? Your friends? Your wife? Your kids? Of course not, it needs to be set aside, in a bubble, waiting for the right moment…The wait is long, too long…The must emerge from its bubble, it must come to live, now!

Backward Lament by Director Lomai

  • While servicing a malfunctioning android, a renewed A.I. scientist reflects upon the controversial exhibit the robot is featured in.
