AfriClassical Futures presents Detroit-based saxophonist, educator, and jazz historian Mike Monford with 9-piece ensemble for a special Sunday of events during AfroFuturist Weekend. Mike will have a performance and panel discussion beginning at 4:30 with opening set by puppeteer and Dark Matter Resident, Anthony Michael Stokes.
Anthony Michael Stokes project, Anansi is a hybrid bunraku/hand /marionette with mechanisms, but other characters and elements will include new hybrid mask puppetry work as well as shadow puppetry, with wire and string work. The piece will include new musical moments, with the show itself acting as a griot storyteller, immersive, spiritual experience.
Monford’s ensemble is a concept called Afrofuturistic Bop - a blend BeBop, Afrofuturism, and Classical music. In this style audience members explore the various rhythms of the African Diaspora, playing written composed charts and also improvise over the charts.
The African Oral tradition is also layered in the music with Spoken Word and Story telling.
