The first AfriClassical Futures Series of 2024 will feature interdisciplinary artist Yaw Agyeman. He works primarily as a musician/sound designer but has an extensive theater background and makes work as a photographer. Yaw's work addresses language and sound as cultural currency. He is also interested in the documents and legacies of families, particularly his own. For this engagement Yaw will present new compositions for voice, woodwinds, electronics, and piano. He’ll be joined by Sharon Udoh on piano and Ben LaMar Gay on horn and electronics. There will be an opening set from Eva Supreme. The performances will be followed by a group discussion including the performers.

Artist Bios

Yaw Agyeman is an interdisciplinary performing artist born in Chicago. He works primarily as a musician/sound designer but also has an extensive theater background (actor) and makes work as a photographer. Yaw's work addresses language and sound as cultural currency. He is also interested in the documents and legacies of families, particularly his own. Most recently, as a Mellon Fellow, Yaw is researched the archives of the Stony Island Arts Bank and created a body of work entitled “Dear Old Thing.” He is a vocalist in the band, ‘Black Monks’, led by internationally known artist Theaster Gates. Yaw’s presentation will interrogate the inclination to love and make in a world where demons rule and the price for singing your song may be your very life.

Eva Supreme is a lover of all things soulful, the definition of a creator in the fullest way. The vocalist, composer, arranger, thespian, producer, dancer, educator, and designer has one taken to heart a quote she lives by, “The only way to do your thing is to do your thing! Listeners can expect to hear melodic & harmonic sounds of the past coupled with textured rhythms with an emphasis on movement.
