Two sets of musical exploration at its most intimate — solo and duo — with artists visiting and new to Chicago’s scene!
Drew Wesely is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, composer, and improvisor focused on relationships between noise, timbre, and duration using various preparations and amplification systems to expand the sonic potential of the instrument. Their practice draws from the fractal scales of form that emerge in improvisation as well as the spatial and physical aspects of sound perception. Recent works include ‘blank body’ an intermedia solo work released via Infrequent Seams, and ‘hypersurface’ an improvising trio with Lester St. Louis and Carlo Costa. Drew has performed at The Stone, Roulette Intermedium, Offene Ohren, Fire Museum, and many other venues nationally and internationally throughout Europe and Asia. Drew was recently a recipient of Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant in support of an extended tour in mainland Japan.
Aaron Kaufman-Levine is a Chicago-based saxophonist, performer-composer and improviser. He currently plays in the AKL quartet, BearDuo, Banana Acid, and Blind Glass and more. He has performed his work at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Constellation, the Chicago Jazz Showcase, Hungry Brain, The LilyPad, Oracle Egg (Los Angeles), and historic Jordan Hall (Boston). Aaron has played with Ken Vandermark, Miguel Zenon, Mehmet Ali Sanlikol, Joe Morris, Michael Formanek, Rajiv Halim, Nanette Frank and more. Aaron is the co-director of the Music in the Garden Music Festival. Caroline Jesalva is a genre-fluid violinist and vocalist traversing the worlds of classical performance, improvisation and experimental music. Inspired by Dadaism, her music explores experimental theater, glossolalia, poetry, and free improvisation. Caroline is the co-artistic director of Music in the Garden, an independent concert series for improvisers, creatives, and experimental artists in Chicago, IL. She is also the co-founder of Subject to Change, a national commissioning project to perform, record, and publish new works for two violins by women and gender minorities. As an improviser, Caroline can be seen performing with Banana Acid (Chicago) and Blind Glass (Boston/Chicago).
