ABOUT THE BANDS

DESSUS DESSOUS : This new project from Hunter Diamond combines acoustic and electronic sounds to invert the relationship between composed and improvised material. Chamber chorales, porch stomps, and cinematic collages sporadically emerge in response to improvised fields of synthesizers, live samples, and tape loops. The improvisations determine if, how, and when the compositions are played. This iteration of dessus-dessous features cellist Katinka Kleijn and bassist Jason Roebke.

Mad Myth Science is Molly Jones, Julian Otis, Wilson Tanner Smith, and Ben Zucker, on vocals, winds, cornet, vibraphone, cello, keys, and other small instruments and electronics. After an initial performance together in February 2020, we have been playing together and working on a group practice over videoconferencing software, and very occasionally figuring out how to play together despite the pandemic. We’ve done some live playing together at shows in Chicago parks last summer and fall, and recently as part of a video collaboration with Corrine Imbierski of the Re:Dance company. The four of us are offer a rich cross-section of Chicago creativity, bringing experience in jazz & creative music, contemporary composition, improvisation, electronics, and dance and theatrical performing arts together into a wide-ranging pageantry of sound and spontaneous rituals.
