Afrofuturist weekend
AFW 2026
October 1-4, 2026
This event is a FREE 4-day celebration of forward-looking music, art, and performance that envisions radically positive futures for Black people. Deploying new technologies, drawing upon history, and subverting/inverting exploitative hierarchies, Afrofuturism puts Black people at the center of narratives about the future.
This year’s theme: “The Cipher” carries many meanings within Afrofuturism. A cipher can be a secret code—a way of protecting knowledge, communicating across boundaries, and preserving histories that dominant narratives have attempted to erase. In Black musical and cultural traditions, a cipher is also a circle of exchange: a space where artists gather to improvise, respond, challenge one another, and create something collectively. It can represent both mystery and revelation, asking who holds knowledge, how it is transmitted, and what new possibilities emerge when ancestral wisdom is decoded and reimagined. Through this theme, Afrofuturist Weekend explores how Black artists transform memory, sound, movement, language, and technology into tools for envisioning liberated futures.
