We Series: a ritual for Spring

We Series is a festival presenting live art that blurs the boundary between performance and reality. Every Tuesday in May, the We Series offers rituals, participatory performance, and immersion in artist-led experiences.

We Series: a ritual for Spring
Featuring Bran Moorhead, Angel Bat Dawid, Glamhag, Hot Kitchen Collective, Jenna Lyle, Erin Kilmurray

This chapter is a ritual to reawaken the forces of spring in a variety of ways. Thawing, awakening, sexual energy, newness, purity, sweetness, wildness. Wear a mask or disguise.

Composer, clarinetist, singer & spiritual jazz soothsayer Angel Bat Dawid descended on Chicago’s jazz & improvised music scene just a few years ago. In very short time, the potency, prowess, spirit & charisma of her cosmic musical proselytizing has taken her from relatively unknown improviser to borderline ubiquitous performer in Chicago’s avant-garde. On any given night you can find Angel adding aura to ensembles led by Ben LaMar Gay, or Damon Locks, or Jaimie Branch, or Matthew Lux, or even, on a Summer night in 2018, onstage doing a woodwind duo with Roscoe Mitchell. Angel Bat Dawid is a Sonic archaeologist gathering and excavating soundz//music from space, the heavens, the ether and beyond. Restoring peace, love and healing to the world using the most powerful tool imaginable — OMINI-VERSAL SOUND. Music is a language, you see, a universal language.-Sun Ra

Glamhag is a flickering image of a woman trapped somewhere.

Hot Kitchen is a Chicago-based theatre and performance group founded by eight artists who met in Florida. Formed in 2016, the group devises performances and experiences with a focus on the stupid and the absurd, disregarding the plot structures of traditional plays. Hot Kitchen has performed work at Steppenwolf Theatre Co., High Concept Labs, Dfbrl8r Performance Art Gallery and other Chicago venues.

Bran Moorhead is a performer, designer, and maker based in Chicago. Favorite projects include: The Fly Honey Show (Technical Director, Performer), The Nostalgia Will Eat Itself {El Bear Theatre} (Director, Designer), Tabletop Tragedies {Cabinet of Curiosity} (Performer), The Human Voice: A Guided Tour (Creator, Performer), Physical Fest (Technical Director), Miss Saigon {Paramount Theater} (Chris). Special thanks to Kris and Sunny. Proud Anti-Capitalist.

We each have an affect on the rooms we enter. With our presence we bring our personal experience and hidden motivations. We encounter others who bring the same. And in this ecology we can develop a common purpose that amplifies, refracts, upsets, or transcends the notions we brought in with us. Just by being together we are making meaning, with and for each other.

Because your presence at the We Series affects us all, we ask some things of you:

-Arrive knowing your presence is part of the event. You may be called to participate.

-Depending on the evening, bring bedding, a mask, or an item for trade. Read instructions carefully.

-If you are able, donate by free will to the artists.
