Fonema Consort – The unknown, my flaws, your building…

In “The unknown, my flaws, your building...”, Fonema Consort delves into the expressive musical potential that lies in the convergence of painting and language, the voice and poetry. This program takes as its starting point the work of iconic Latin American creators Clarice Lispector, Roberto Matta, and Chavela Vargas. At the center of the program is Richard Barrett’s virtuosic tour de force Coïgitum, which took its inspiration from Chilean painter Roberto Matta’s large-scale homonymous work. Featured are new works by Fernanda Aoki Navarro, Pablo Chin (Si Chavela met Matta II), and an excerpt from McKnight Fellow Tiffany Skidmore’s opera in the making (no stars).

Fonema Consort performs explorative new music for the voice and instruments, and is driven by a fascination with the rich possibilities of the auditory and dramatic interplay of this instrumentation in modern music. The ensemble has an additional focus on presenting new works by Latin American composers. Founded in 2011, Fonema has premiered over 50 new works, and has performed extensively in the US and increasingly in Latin America. They are two-time recipients of the Ernst von Siemens grant, and have received grants from the Aaron Copland Foundation, the French American Cultural Exchange, Amphion, and the City of Chicago.  www.fonemaconsort.com
