NbN Trio with Amanda Gutierrez & Tim Feeney
NbN: Nora Barton, Billie Howard, and Nomi Epstein – strings, percussion + Amanda Gutierrez – video. Tim Feeney – percussion and electronics
NbN Trio is a Chicago-based, acoustic, experimental improvisation trio made up of Nora Barton, Billie Howard, and Nomi Epstein.
Amanda Gutierrez will join the trio with live video.
Tim Feeney (percussion and electronics) seeks to explore and examine the timbral possibilities inherent in everyday found and built objects. He treats his percussion setup as a friction instrument, using bows, scrapers, and rosined drumheads to capture and amplify frequencies that go unheard when an object is struck with a traditional mallet. He supplements this acoustic console with an electronic instrument, arranged from mixers, contact microphones, and effects pedals, that synthesizes and alters the spectral characteristics of low-fidelity tones, feedback, and noise.

METRICS is a five-movement suite composed for a 10 piece ensemble. The idea behind the suite is derived from a variety of impressions of what the word Metrics means. In jazz and improvised music, there is a trend towards shifting meters and odd time signatures, and this work makes widespread use of these devices. Metrics also refers to measurement, and also the study of meter in poetry. The piece attempts to realize these ideals by formulating both “poetic” melodic statements, and various forms which evolve in a measured way. The music is at times incredibly dynamic with a deep rhythmic drive, and at other times is plaintive and restrained.
The collaborative Meridian Trio delves equally into the realms of modern jazz and the avant-garde through a unique musical kinship, and a book of original material. The music of Matt Ulery’s Loom features lush harmonic landscapes, cinematic themes, and a first-rate lineup of virtuoso instrumentalists.
Showcasing his masterful finger-picking technique, Matt Schneider’s meditative solo performances unfold as densely patterned sonic tapestries which surround and dazzle the listener. The richly textured music of Bill MacKay’s Darts and Arrows shimmers with stirring melodies that frame attentive interplay between the members of a perfectly cast ensemble.
This double bill pairing features a rare solo set by renowned Chicago percussionist and Elastic regular Frank Rosaly, alongside one of the most promising working trios to emerge from the active milieu of Chicago’s younger improvising musicians.
