Dark Matter Residency Artist Announcement!

Elastic Arts is incredibly excited to announce our 2020 Dark Matter Residents. The Dark Matter Residency supports Chicago-based, emerging artists of color whose work challenges the hegemonic hierarchies of race through performance and visual representation. The Residency provides artists with a flexible, functional space, a platform, and a network to help develop their work and career, while the Residents bring fresh vitality and urgency into Elastic’s creative community. Like last year the high number of exceptional applications made the selection process very difficult, but we’re confident that these artists will make remarkable work during their time with us.

The 2020 Dark Matter Residents are:

Katrina Brook Flores aka El La Katrina is a Xicanx multimedia Chicago-based artist and storyteller. Their work addresses the meaning of boundary-spanning, border-crossing, and binary-breaking through interrogating the way colonial systems, hierarchical institutions, gendered constructs and conquer & divide tactics have hurt indigenous communities and natural ecosystems globally. The work goes beyond interrogation and seeks to offer solutions, healings and hope in calling forward a (re)claimed and (re)imagined future rooted in joyful ways of being and ancestral teachings.

Sojourner Zenobia she/they is a multidisciplinary artist using movement, experimental vocals, installation, character work and somatic healing modalities to create participatory non-linear dreamscapes. Sojourner’s work is an invitation to repair and build our relationships with the spirit world and to become more self aware of our power through the transformative nature of art.

Margaret is a vocalist, an award winning choreographer, theater producer, and published poet. They have collaborated with countless artists and organizations to create dynamic work, most recently concentrating on a genre-defying piece called Quantum Negress Tantras (QNT). She teaches dance improvisation, composition, yoga, and pilates, with the hope that she may continually help others find greater capacities for joy, pleasure, and expression.

Please join us in congratulating our 2020 Dark Matter Residents! And stay tuned for announcements of their upcoming presentations at Elastic Arts and streaming through The Dark Matter Artist Residency is made possible by the generous support of The Joyce Foundation and by contributions from our community. Thank you!
