First meeting of this improvising quartet! Bassist Lisa Mezzacappa makes a rare visit from the San Francisco Bay Area for an improvised set of music with Chicago creative music heroes, Nick Mazzarella (alto sax), Jason Stein (bass clarinet) and Mike Reed (drums). Expect high energy grooves, spacious soundscapes, lyrical flights and abstract musings.
Asheville-based guitarist Shane Parish makes a long overdue return to the Elastic Arts stage for a set of solo music, and Chicago percussionist Emerson Hunton presents this trio collaboration featuring Boston-based pianist Eric Krouse and electronic improviser/composer Ted Moore. Using live processing, feedback, modular synthesis, and acoustic instruments, the trio presents improvisations ranging from stark minimalism to frenetic density. The trio’s first meeting was in May of 2018 at the University of Chicago, where a recording was made.
Tatsu Aoki’s The MIYUMI Project returns to Elastic Arts! One of the longest standing amalgams drawing from the aesthetics of Japanese traditional music and Chicago’s avant-garde jazz and experimental music. The presentations are improvised compositions that stem from a conceptual framework for each band member to interpret, which is then transformed into a contemporary musical immersion for the audience. Each successive grouping of MIYUMI Project musicians over the past two decades have contributed to the unique blending of modern application with traditional sensibility. The final result is a continuous evolution of a "live and raw" musical happening. Tonight’s performance of Tatsu Aoki’s MIYUMI Project include: Mwata Bowden, Coco Elysses, Edward Wilkerson Jr., Jaime Kempkers, and Kioto Aoki, and special guest: Tsukasa Taiko.
The return of Eliel Sherman Storey’s Renegade Collaboration to Elastic Arts Performance space featuring Jun Cameron, a creative percussionist that conjures complex rhythms that evoke the African aesthetic of trance. Kevin Clay-El, a multi-instrumentalist who for this performance will focus his energy on the bass guitar takes the responsibility to hold together an ever-moving soundscape spun by the irrepressible melodies of Eliel. As the case with all of Eliel's live performances this will be recorded, so come take part of what surely will be a magical evening.
Celebrating over ten years of collaborating together, Berlin saxophonist/composer, Gebhard Ullmann and NYC trombonist/composer Steve Swell join two of Chicago's finest improvising musicians; Fred Lonberg-Holm, cello/electronics and percussionist Michael Zerang for this new configuration. Building on the strength and ideals of those three cities the quartet creates enough fireworks to light up the night sky with their brilliant sound imagery. Ullmann/Swell's Chicago Plan thoroughly breaks new ground for what Jazz and New Music ensembles' approach to what creative music should be.
