Spires that in the Sunset Rise / Ayanna Woods / BWS Trio$10The legendary Spires that in the Sunset Rise (Ka Baird & Taralie Peterson) return to Elastic Arts in honor of their new release "House Ecstatic (Cover Your Blood)” on Astral Spirits!
Since 2001, Spires That in the Sunset Rise have been unsettling and thrilling audiences with their brand of sonic alchemy. Described by Jack Rose as a “female Sun City Girls,” they contributed a different slant to the New Folk movement by incorporating various avant-garde and world music influences into their sound.
Ayanna Woods has been called “Chicago’s Renaissance Woman. ” A composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist from Chicago, Ayanna earned her BA in music composition from Yale University. Her pieces have been performed by the Wet Ink Ensemble, members of Fifth House Ensemble, the Chicago Children’s Choir, and others. Ayanna is a ravenous collaborator across genres. Her work as a writer, producer, and arranger can be found in film scores for Manual Cinema, Revive LLC, and the viral web series Brown Girls, as well as in Jamila Woods’ release, Heavn, and Ayanna’s own solo project called Yadda Yadda. She is a recipient of Third Coast Percussion’s 2017 Emerging Composers Partnership. Her music explores the spaces between acoustic and electronic, traditional and esoteric, wildly improvisational and mathematically rigorous.
The Trio of Mark Shippy, Ben Baker Billington, and Daniel Wyche return with “The Eventual Warpcat” out now on Chicago’s No Index. Following their maniacal self-titled slaughter of a debut on Astral Spirits, the BSW 3 return but this time it’s dark and stormy. “The Eventual Warp Cat” is a cosmic eulogy, like a captain’s log on a drifting spacecraft. If Part 1 serves as side-long voyage into a blackhole, then Side 2 is from inside the blackhole- a ghost ship ride starting with a buzz, eventually building into a massive supernova filling every millimeter of the stereo field.
