Nick Millevoi’s Desertion Trio is the newest project from intrepid Philadelphia-based guitarist/composer Nick Millevoi, exploring the sonic space between Neil Young’s expansive work with Crazy Horse, late 60s free jazz, and the NY Downtown scene. Nick co-leads noise-jazz trio Many Arms, makes one half of the duo Archer Spade, plays guitar in Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, and, with guitarist Matt Hollenberg, co-leads a quartet that exclusively performs extreme versions of John Zorn’s Bagatelles.
Nick’s music has been released by labels such as Tzadik, New Atlantis, Gaffer, The Flenser, Sick Room, and Public Eyesore. His music has been reviewed by Pitchfork, SPIN, NPR Music, The Onion AV Club, Wire magazine, and many others. In May 2015, Shhpuma, part of the Clean Feed label, focused on releasing music that goes “beyond, below and above the jazz realm,” will release the debut record by Desertion, featuring bassist Johnny DeBlase, keyboardist Jamie Saft, and drummer Ches Smith. In a track premiere for NPR Music, Lars Gotrich said Desertion “hits the sweet spot between Neil Young’s exploratory Crazy Horse jams and a spaghetti western soundtrack,” and Aquarium Drunkard said, “Desertion is well worth getting lost in.” For this tour, Nick will be joined by Johnny DeBlase on bass and Kevin Shea (Mostly Other People Do The Killing, Storm & Stress) on drums.
Composer and bassoonist Katherine Young creates acoustic and electro-acoustic music that uses curious timbres, rhythmic pressure, and kinetic structures to explore the dramatic physicality of sound, shifting interpersonal dynamics, and tensions between the familiar and the strange. The New York Times described her music as “raw, wailing, coloristic,” and New Music Box has noted “her visceral approach to sound; her organic use of repetition, structure, and pacing; her attentiveness to the smallest details of timbre; her adventurousness in using instruments in unexpected ways.”
Michael Vallera is a Chicago-based guitarist and visual artist who also composes alongside percussionist Steven Hess as Cleared (Immune Recordings) and with Joseph Clayton Mills as Maar (Umor Rex, Entr’acte). Previously using the pseudonym COIN, his solo debut “Distance” was released in the summer of 2015 (Opal Tapes).
